was established in 1952 when a group of area farmers formed the North Unit Rural Fire Protection District, The name North Unit was used because the District boundaries were the same as the North Unit Irrigation District. In 1984 the District’s name was changed to Jefferson County Rural Fire Protection District 1. In 1985 the city of Madras annexed into the Fire District. The District covers 200 square miles and 14,000 residents in Jefferson County (Oregon)
