Cowlitz County Rural Fire Protection District 2 was established in 1947. Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue covers 152 square miles and serves approximately 36,000 residents in Cowlitz County (Washington) operating out of four stations. C2FR operated out of 7 stations at one time.

In 1998 Longview Fire Department and Cowlitz 2 merged the administrative and became Longview/Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue, and in 2001

Cowlitz-Skamania Fire District 7 is a small rural Fire District located in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Cowlitz County District 7 was established in 1977. Skamania merged with Cowlitz Fire District 7 in 1998  creating Cowlitz-Skamania Fire District 7 covering approximately 54 square miles in Cowlitz-Skamania Counties (Washington) operating out of four stations.

Cowlitz-Lewis Fire District 20 was established in 2012 when voters approved a cross-county merger of Cowlitz County Fire District 4 (Ryderwood) and Lewis County Fire District 7 (Vader). The Ryderwood Volunteer Fire Department (Cowlitz District 4) was originally formed in 1954.
